Visit to Universities in Upstate NY - Rochester Institute of Technology, University of Rochester, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Ithaca College, Syracuse University. Colgate College, Hamilton College, Union College, Skidmore College, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

Rochester Institute of Technology
  • University is focussed on Co-op programs (work and study)
  • Preparing students for imaginative age (multidisciplinary majors)
  • RIT is a Tech school with a performing arts focus

          University of Rochester
  • Eastman school of music (amazing music school for those who are looking for this creative field)
  • Take five (fifth year to study anything you want tuition-free)
  • 26% International students (that's a huge number compared to other universities)

          Hobart and William Smith Colleges
  • Both are small universities (Hobart is 1000 men and WS is 1000 women)
  • The learning environment is very personalized and supportive, which helps students who need extra support and hand holding
  • Only one required course (freshmen seminar) and then skills

Ithaca College
  • Exploratory program for kids who are undecided
  • ICC themes instead of required courses so flexibility to avoid certain subjects if you want
  • 6000 undergraduate students so it is a medium sized college

Syracuse University 
  • Huge sports culture (including division one basketball, Falk school)
  • Newhouse School for communications industry (Journalism, Social media, Advertising, Public Relations, Photography, Film) so plenty of scope for students who are looking into the creative field
  • Apply directly to the college within the University (good to know which major you want so you can apply accordingly)

Colgate College 
  • Small school but still division one Athletics
  • Small town (doubles in size when university is in session) which is very supportive of uni (every Friday the town cooks dinner for international students of different International food and even drive an hour away to get some ingredients)
  • Huge budget for students to run events clubs etc which means lots of opportunities for leadership and new ideas

          Hamilton College 
  • Open curriculum/no required classes (also Brown, Grinnell, Smith so students in class want to be there)
  • Division three sports (no merit scholarships but the meet 100% demonstrated financial need)
  • 24/7 learning space since students live on campus (exposed to different ideas in class, dorms, cafeteria, clubs etc)

Union College
  • Each student assigned to one of seven Minerva houses where events are held 
  • Liberal arts engineering program (students can still can double major or study abroad)
  • Close relationships with professors lead to research, internships, jobs - which is amazing for students to build a strong network through the uni

Skidmore College
  • Holiday destination (town) so lots to do
  • Offer BA and BS with 1/3 of students doing a lab science major
  • Students have the option of spending first year in London

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
  • 47% engineering (53% non engineering... Like Sciences, Business, Architecture, Music for students who love tech)
  • 19% International students and 31% female 
  • Easy to change majors in first year and double major even between schools
