Getting kids to school on time - Step 1

27/9/2016

My goal is to have every kid in school by 07.45 before the Diwali break.  It shouldn’t be too difficult, I’ll just do what other schools do.  I’ll shut the gate at 07.45 and send home everyone who arrives after that.

But that will be step 2.  Before I can take that step, I need to sort out the buses.  I want to be sure that all kids get to their bus on time, so that, if the bus still arrives at school late, I know it’s not the kid’s fault.  (So I can have them given passes to enter after 07.45).

What happens right now is that if kids are not waiting at the pickup point when the bus arrives, the bus waits for them.  Sometimes the bus attendant will phone the apartment to let them know that the bus is downstairs waiting.  This happens a lot on some routes and it makes the bus late.  As the year progresses, the problem gets worse.  And, as always, it’s the same kids day after day after day.
Not any more.  Starting Monday, October 3rd, the bus drivers will be directed to leave their pickup points at the designated time.  They will not be allowed to wait for kids who are running late.

So, if your pickup time is 07.05, then your kid will need to be there by 07.05.  If he gets downstairs at 07.06, the bus will be gone.  If you want to be sure he doesn’t miss the bus, get him down there at 07.00.

Please tell everyone about this.  Use your Whatsapp.

I’ll give you a couple of weeks to get used to this, then we’ll move in to step 2.

The kind of efforts you are taking is really commendable and I am really sad that you are still not getting the desired results. What really surprises me is that punctuality should be a basic habit (like washing hands!) and not something that needs to be enforced. I do hope you meet your Diwali target!

i am so so happy that OIS is finally doing what our Schools enforced as a student in us. I would also like you to please bring in some discipline in the student uniforms ....... some kids just wear the school shirt in the name of a uniform, the shirt is matched up with denim shorts, track pants, tights etc...and the hairdo's can really give any model a run for her money....

Sir, Happy to see your various emails on implementation of the much needed discipline in school. The school has a fantastic teaching and non- teaching staff and a fantastic student base, but without a little discipline half the effort is lost.
Hope to see many more such improvements in the area of student discipline

Neil appreciate the personal effort. As a culture we need to inculcate punctuality. Had a suggestion on step 2. Do you think it is possible to introduce a system of late passes initially? So if children reach between 7.45 to 7.50 they get a late pass and the third time they are sent home. Just to maybe transition in step 2 as soon as school reopens after diwali

It is more than just about punctuality, isn't it? It is about respect for others. Respect for other people's time. Thank you, Neil, for taking up this initiative so seriously.

Sir, its really nice to see ur efforts. Interaction directly with the headmaster is truly applaudable.
Wud like to add if u we cud also bring down the no of cars coming to school in the mornin , that wud save a lot of time, considering every minute is crucial before school time for both the children and parents.
Why dnt we work on an effective carpooling .
Or also a survey of the parents for their views on the school transport.
