It is timely that after 6 weeks back for this first semester, we stop and reflect on how the year is progressing.
The stand out for me is how well the year has started for us in the continued virtual environment we find ourselves still in. This year is very different from this time last year - the city is opening up, businesses are returning to somewhat normal work but children remain at home, learning online. We are very conscious that our planning in June for this academic year may not still be applicable for our parent community right now. To this end we sent out a survey to our parent community on August 19, and received feedback over the next 7 days. The response rate was disappointing with only 15% of our primary families responding. In saying that the data we received was affirming of what we were doing which was reassuring for me and my pedagogical leadership team. The attached responses to the survey can also be viewed on the pedagogical leadership blog. The one area where we received the most feedback was from our Early Years families. We have listened to your feedback but we still have some questions for you. We want to make sure that we have heard you right. I ask that if you are one of our Nursery, JKG, or if you are one of our Senior Kindergarten families that you respond to this attached survey, we have also the survey on our PLT blog; your response will inform our decision making. We have presented in all grades an alternative to the schedule we are running at the moment based on the feedback from you, our parents, and from our faculty. In order to have your say, please take some time to respond. Responses will close on Wednesday, September 22, 2021. Next week sees our student, parent, teacher meetings and it is heartening to share with you that as of today 60% of you have booked your time to meet with the homeroom teacher. Last week information was shared with you about the conferences and I would urge you, if you haven’t already, to take a minute to familiarise yourself with the format for these which again can be found on the PLT Blog. ![]() Dear Parents, You will note from the school calendar that Friday September 24, 2021 is a conference day, and there will be no school for children on this day. Similar to last year, we are offering additional meeting times on two other afternoons to give more flexibility to both our parents and teachers in these times of learning from home. The following PLT Blog post is lengthy, but details all the information you will need for the coming conferences. If you have questions you can connect with your child's homeroom teacher and they can support you or guide you to someone who can. Each conference is scheduled for 20 minutes on the following days:
Parent Teacher Meetings for Nursery and JKG (No school for children on this day) Parents of children in Nursery and JKG will have parent teacher meetings. "These are designed to give the parents information about the student’s progress development and needs. Teachers should take this opportunity to gather background information, to answer the parents’ questions, to address their concerns, and to help define their role in the learning process. The parents should take the opportunity to provide the teacher with the cultural context of the student’s learning.” [PYP Making It Happen] 3 Way Conferences for SKG – Grade 5 (No school for children on this day) Parents of children in SKG – Grade 5 will have 3 Way Conferences. 3 way conferences involve the student, parent and teacher and sometimes a member from the Student Support Team if this is appropriate. The student, parents and teacher collaborate to establish and identify the student’s strengths and areas for improvement. This may lead to setting of new goals, with all determining how they can support the achievement of these goals. Will you meet other single subject teachers at these conferences? The answer to this question is no, on this day single subject teachers will not be meeting with parents. A conference with Single Subject teachers is planned for later in this semester on November 11th and 12th. However, as always the staff are available to talk through any queries you may have regarding the progress and development of your children and I would ask, that should you wish to discuss any issues you may have, that you contact the secretaries to make an appointment or directly with the single subject teacher. Booking your conference opens on Monday, September 13th and closes on Monday, September 20th.
