Exploring new avenues with an open-minded attitude to expand one’s own knowledge is the key to learning Visual Arts in Secondary at OIS.

Last Friday we saw our teachers engaging in a fruitful day of professional development. Teachers Teaching Teachers involved a large number of teachers organising workshops on a wide variety of aspects, using a range or teaching approaches, helping other teachers from Primary, Secondary and Early Years to gain knowledge and understanding of relevant educational topics. 
Workshops ranged from 'Green Screen Technology in the Classroom' to 'Modern Day Library Resources'. There were also introductory sessions to Bujinkan, the Japanese martial art and 'French Language for Beginners' which was actually led by a group of students who did an amazing job!
Overall the feeling of camaraderie and learning between the teachers was fantastic and lots of new ideas were shared, which OIS students will begin benefiting from immediately.

Last week at the HS Assembly, we were treated with some fantastic student performances. The recording isn't fantastic, but the performances definitely were :)

The Secondary Art Department recently had a visit from two members of staff from the Arts University Bournemouth, England. Claire McIntyre and Amanda Evans gave two presentations on the Bespoke ‘Art and Design’ Summer Course run by AUB and currently planned for Grades 7 to 11 in June 2017. 
They also provided the 10th and 12th Grade students with support in Art Portfolio Preparation for their future college and university applications.

Lifelong learning is a living philosophy at OIS. In their departmental meeting this week, our Math teachers were given the challenge of constructing a tower using a limited supply of dried spaghetti and a limited number of marshmallows. 
This is a classic team-work dependent exercise which brought the members of the department together in order to further their understanding and appreciation of the importance of communication within the learning of their students.  
We are constantly looking for, and finding, new ways to invigorate and challenge our teachers, so that they are constantly learning and developing their own skills. This is not only fantastic for what they are able to facilitate in each of their classes, but it also models good learning behaviour and attitude for OIS students. 

Grade 10 Students ousted the management from the boardroom this week to hold a  professionally set debate about the pros and cons of fast food. The only difference being that they used their debating skills fantastically, but through the medium of the Spanish Language! Miss Isabelle was the moderator and the students came up with some great arguments both for and against fast food.

Extremely proud to announce OIS' successful participation in the Conquest-Football tournament organised by Singapore International School. Our student-athletes served as excellent ambassadors for OIS. 
Girls Group Stage Results:

• ABWS 1 - 1 OIS
• BD Somani 0 - 2 OIS
• HFS 0 - 2 OIS

Our girls topped their group with 7 points to set up a semi-final match with CVSL. 
Team goals finished by Aliya (Gold Ball Award recipient) and Aahana booked the Leopards a spot for the championship match against our hosts, SIS. (Final score 2-1)
Our girls displayed excellent TEAM football. Despite performing at their highest level, we suffered a narrow defeat on penalty shootouts.

Gr.9 to 12 visual arts students were treated to a guest artist who led them in a highly successful print workshop during an 'in-school field trip'. Here's some of their fantastic work. (From Neha P, photos from Tony W).

As the 12th Grade students near graduation and give thought to their futures, a master class was planned and coordinated by Ms Tiffany and Ms Neha for a lecture along with a session on Portfolio Preparation for Visual Art Grade 12 students. The representatives and practicing artists from  Art Institute of Chicago, Mr. David Murray, and Ms. Jackson shared their expertise and  feedback  with the students wanting to pursue a career in the Artistic and Creative industries.

The IB expects Visual Arts students to explore new media and art techniques, the 11th and 12th Graders have been learning to cast objects in plaster and alginate. The students have done extremely well to embrace these new techniques, with quite a few individuals developing the initial workshops into impressive studio works. This week has seen their hard work come to fruition with multiple casts of hands, feet and various other objects popping out of their moulds successfully

What a colourful week it has been here at OIS for Navratri. Monday was White, Tuesday Red, Wednesday Royal Blue, Thursday Yellow, and Friday Green. Here are some snaps of some teachers in colourful attire. I'll add more colours if I can find them :)

Grade 7 Drama students performed as clowns in a 3 ring circus, using no words, minimal props and a whole lot of creativity. 

The Grade 6 Humanities students have been learning how geographical challenges often lead to adaptation. The Mesopotamians, for instance, designed levees to regulate water supply from the rivers. These are still used today in flood prone areas. In an exercise in critical thinking, students designed and constructed levees from a selection of materials and tested them. ​

Welcome to the 'secondary blog' It has been another action packed week in secondary. We've had rain, more rain, torrential rain, intermittent thunderstorms and despite all this, there has been some fantastic work happening in classrooms all over the building.
This weekend OIS is hosting OIS MUN, students have worked hard to get this conference up and running. We'll report on this and lots more next week... come back and visit :)

The English Department ran a wonderful 'English Week'... there were word jumbles, quotes of the day, book reviews, D.E.A.R (drop everything and read), dress up as a character day, spoken word poetry workshops, 'think on your feet' and many more fabulous activities.

 Last Saturday 75+ students and 25 teachers volunteered to help clean Juhu Beach. Despite some grim weather, everyone worked together to collect an impressive amount of rubbish. (Photos from Saurabh T)

​Welcome Oberoi International School Athletics fans and guests.  We have a number of successful sports teams and all the children represent the school with great pride and honour.  Oberoi International School believes that a dynamic program of student activities is vital to the educational development of our students, while recognizing that athletic programs are secondary to our academic programs. The goal of these programs is to realize the value of participation without over-emphasizing the importance of winning. The purpose is to develop and improve character traits among the program’s participants. We believe our programs should expand the experiences available to middle and high school students.
It is true that the most memorable moments in sports are those incredible examples of beating the odds through what seems like sheer magic. OIS Leopards train to experience this magic through sports like Basketball, Track and Field, Tennis, Football, Cricket, Volleyball, Badminton, Table Tennis and Swimming.   
 
The athletic calendar comprises of 3 athletic seasons.
 
Season 1: August 22nd  to October 27th, 2016
 
Season 2: November 07th, 2016 to February 05th, 2017
 
Season 3: February 06th to April 30th, 2017
 
This year to accommodate greater number of aspiring athletes we have created two training batches instead of one for a few popular sports.   
 The school facilitates students who play other sports and train outside the school by registering them with the MSSA (Mumbai School Sports Association) and DSO (District Sports Organisation), providing the documentation and leaves required to participate.  
 Practice games with other international schools are intermittently scheduled to build camaraderie with other local teams and infuse a sense of  non-competitive sportsmanship.
