Congratulations! to the High School Girls' football Team

30/11/2018

In this, their third year of competition, the High School Girls' football squad has participated in a number of 6,7 and 8 a-side tournaments across Mumbai, as they did last year. Results have been outstanding winning the Hirandani Foundation School U19s and the BD Somani U19s tournaments as well as finishing runners up at the Spandan(Lonavala) U18s and the BD Somani U16s tournament.
The Middle School players have also been highly successful, filling gaps in the U16s, the U18s and U19s squads, and winning the BD Somani U14s tournament and the B team taking the runners up spot.

The biggest success story by far this season, has been in the Reliance Foundation Youth Sports School Girls tournament, where our U19 team was participating for the first time in a national 11-a-side competition. With our mighty leopards finishing as the second placed team in Mumbai, losing to the 2016-17 National Champions, Fr Agnel Multipurpose School, Vashi, there is a lot of hope for the future.

Aahana Punjabi, the girls captain and Niyati Pragya finishing second in the competitions for Golden Boot (top scorer) and Golden Gloves (best goalkeeper with the most clean sheets) we were delighted that Anshita Pant picked up the Golden Ball award for best overall player.

As coach, the most amazing thing about this team has been the sportsmanship, spirit and family-like support that the girls have given each other through the ups and downs of the season. The support of the MS squad for the HS squad and the big-sisterly mentoring of the HS girls for the MS girls has been quite moving at times.

These are remarkable achievements considering the youthful make-up of our squad compared to the age, size and experience of many of our opponents and with our Leopardesses already reflecting on Thursday's performance in the final, I have already met with the senior players in the HS squad to look at how we can plan for the year ahead so that this year's cup run can be a launchpad for more girls' football success in the years to come.

Visual Arts - Jewellery Design

Exploring new avenues with an open-minded attitude to expand one’s own knowledge is the key to learning Visual Arts in Secondary at OIS.

Staying true to this, Visual Arts students had an opportunity to work with Jewellery Designer Ms. Mohita Suvanam to learn the basics of Jewellery Design during an ‘internal field trip’. (From Ms. Aparna Mugwe)

Teachers (& Students!) Teaching Teachers

Last Friday we saw our teachers engaging in a fruitful day of professional development. Teachers Teaching Teachers involved a large number of teachers organising workshops on a wide variety of aspects, using a range or teaching approaches, helping other teachers from Primary, Secondary and Early Years to gain knowledge and understanding of relevant educational topics.
Workshops ranged from 'Green Screen Technology in the Classroom' to 'Modern Day Library Resources'. There were also introductory sessions to Bujinkan, the Japanese martial art and 'French Language for Beginners' which was actually led by a group of students who did an amazing job!
Overall the feeling of camaraderie and learning between the teachers was fantastic and lots of new ideas were shared, which OIS students will begin benefiting from immediately.

'The Rose' & 'I dreamed a dream'

Last week at the HS Assembly, we were treated with some fantastic student performances. The recording isn't fantastic, but the performances definitely were :)

A visit from Arts University Bournemouth

The Secondary Art Department recently had a visit from two members of staff from the Arts University Bournemouth, England. Claire McIntyre and Amanda Evans gave two presentations on the Bespoke ‘Art and Design’ Summer Course run by AUB and currently planned for Grades 7 to 11 in June 2017.
They also provided the 10th and 12th Grade students with support in Art Portfolio Preparation for their future college and university applications.

A collaboration between IB1 Math HL & SL had students making functions and transforming them using their bodies and their position on giant cartesian axes. (Photos courtesy of Yogendrav & Shraddha)

Gr.7 Remote Controller Showcase

In Grade 7, our students worked on a project where they designed their own game controllers and made it functional using makey makey.
The different steps of the design cycle were seen and demonstrated clearly and each step was understood in depth by the students. Students worked on researching different game controllers, they performed a skit to showcase which game controller was the best, they also worked to understand a simple circuit since Makey Makey works on the concept of completing a circuit and in the end they went on to design their game controllers and made it using the different materials.
We culminated this unit with a showcase of the different game controllers in the library on 26th October 2016.
Here is a glimpse of a few students working on their project.

Astrotrek

High school Physics students went on an unique adventure and educational experience to Chail (Shimla) for ASTROTREK. The trip involved personal development challenges with science, astronomy and astrophotography.
During 5 days and 4 nights OIS Physics students had the opportunity to explore astronomy and science. We had access to modern high-tech equipment, such as the specialised Coronado Hydrogen-alpha telescope for solar astronomy, 8" Schmidt Cassegrain and refractor telescopes and a comprehensive range of digital astrophotography and accessory equipment. Additionally we were engaged in star trails, interactive presentations, Zip lining, practical experience using Newton’s laws, trajectories of falling bodies StormRocketry, Wall climbing, bridge building, and a Burma bridge adventure activity!
A truly remarkable learning experience for all of us.

Teachers' learning is vital at OIS

Lifelong learning is a living philosophy at OIS. In their departmental meeting this week, our Math teachers were given the challenge of constructing a tower using a limited supply of dried spaghetti and a limited number of marshmallows.
This is a classic team-work dependent exercise which brought the members of the department together in order to further their understanding and appreciation of the importance of communication within the learning of their students.
We are constantly looking for, and finding, new ways to invigorate and challenge our teachers, so that they are constantly learning and developing their own skills. This is not only fantastic for what they are able to facilitate in each of their classes, but it also models good learning behaviour and attitude for OIS students.

Grade 10 Students ousted the management from the boardroom this week to hold a  professionally set debate about the pros and cons of fast food. The only difference being that they used their debating skills fantastically, but through the medium of the Spanish Language! Miss Isabelle was the moderator and the students came up with some great arguments both for and against fast food.

First EVER girls soccer trophy

Extremely proud to announce OIS' successful participation in the Conquest-Football tournament organised by Singapore International School. Our student-athletes served as excellent ambassadors for OIS.
Girls Group Stage Results:
  • ABWS 1 - 1 OIS
  • BD Somani 0 - 2 OIS
  • HFS 0 - 2 OIS
Our girls topped their group with 7 points to set up a semi-final match with CVSL.
Team goals finished by Aliya (Gold Ball Award recipient) and Aahana booked the Leopards a spot for the championship match against our hosts, SIS. (Final score 2-1)
Our girls displayed excellent TEAM football. Despite performing at their highest level, we suffered a narrow defeat on penalty shootouts.

I have fierce pride in our ladies because on Monday, they will bring with them OIS' first trophy in girl's Football.  (Courtesy of Coach Bachka)

OIS Kayaking Club

Over the past two weekends, OIS teachers and students have been traveling to Karjat for whitewater fun and adventure on the Pej River. India is rapidly gaining international attention for its whitewater rivers, and we at OIS are excited to be contributing to India's next generation of kayakers. We had an excellent trip and are already in the process of planning several more for this academic year. These trips are open to everyone (including absolute beginners), and all required gear and instruction are included. We'll be releasing more information in the school bulletin soon—we hope you join us on the river! (From Lukas G)

Gr.6 French

'Grade 6 students enjoyed a game of 'Quelle heure est-il, Monsieur Le Loup?' in the refuge area during French class this week. Merci pour la masque, Monsieur Pascal et merci pour le chapeau, Madame Tiffany!' (From Sarah T)

IB1 Spanish ab initio

Today, Gr.11 Spanish ab initio students went down to the second floor and taught Spanish to Grade 1 students. You've really got to know something well in order to teach it, and these Gr.11 students rose to the challenge. (From Isabelle C)

Gr.11 CAS retreat

The Grade 11 CAS Retreat was held on Thursday, October 6th. This was done in-house for a few hours after school and the students had a blast untangling knots, playing games, dropping eggs and making movies about the IB Learner Profile. The result of the retreat is that the students are now a closer-knit group and better equipped to tackle the rigorous DP Program.

Art Institute Chicago Visit

As the 12th Grade students near graduation and give thought to their futures, a master class was planned and coordinated by Ms Tiffany and Ms Neha for a lecture along with a session on Portfolio Preparation for Visual Art Grade 12 students. The representatives and practicing artists from  Art Institute of Chicago, Mr. David Murray, and Ms. Jackson shared their expertise and  feedback  with the students wanting to pursue a career in the Artistic and Creative industries.

Visual Artists

The IB expects Visual Arts students to explore new media and art techniques, the 11th and 12th Graders have been learning to cast objects in plaster and alginate. The students have done extremely well to embrace these new techniques, with quite a few individuals developing the initial workshops into impressive studio works. This week has seen their hard work come to fruition with multiple casts of hands, feet and various other objects popping out of their moulds successfully

Navratri @ OIS

What a colourful week it has been here at OIS for Navratri. Monday was White, Tuesday Red, Wednesday Royal Blue, Thursday Yellow, and Friday Green. Here are some snaps of some teachers in colourful attire. I'll add more colours if I can find them :)

3 Ring Circus

Grade 7 Drama students performed as clowns in a 3 ring circus, using no words, minimal props and a whole lot of creativity.

Gr.6 Humanities

The Grade 6 Humanities students have been learning how geographical challenges often lead to adaptation. The Mesopotamians, for instance, designed levees to regulate water supply from the rivers. These are still used today in flood prone areas. In an exercise in critical thinking, students designed and constructed levees from a selection of materials and tested them.

OIS MUN

Last weekend was OIS MUN. ~200 students spent all weekend here debating their hearts out. Congratulations to all the student organisers and participants. Thanks also, to Sudha, Megha and all the teacher volunteers. Here's a fantastic video & some photos (courtesy of the press team).

From some of our Artists

For our Visual Arts IBDP students, learning doesn’t just happen within the classroom. We encourage our students to engage with the contemporary art world. Being aware of contemporary art trends is vital to young artists as both a source of inspiration and for the development of their own professional conduct.
Students explored the wonders of Mumbai’s vibrant art scene, visiting some independent galleries with Ms Sarah over a weekend. (From Neha)

Not your regular math activities...

Jack Sparrow hid some treasure on an island. Students had to follow the bearings to locate the treasure.
The Math teachers got their hands dirty as they created all the props themselves and set the stage for a very exciting treasure hunt. The students were completely engaged in the collaborative activity and had great fun while learning! (From Shraddha & Ninad)
Grade 8 formative activity on 'Algebraic Operations' using the "Rolling Cubes". Students rolled the 3 cubes simultaneously and recorded the expressions and the operator that appeared on the top faces. (From Dipti)

Student Council Elections

After a nail biting Student Council Presidential and Vice Presidential Election, we can now announce that
  • Shania S is our new Student Council President
  • Hakyung Y is our new  Vice President
Congratulations to all our wonderful candidates. We couldn't be more proud.

This week in secondary...

Welcome to the 'secondary blog' It has been another action packed week in secondary. We've had rain, more rain, torrential rain, intermittent thunderstorms and despite all this, there has been some fantastic work happening in classrooms all over the building.
This weekend OIS is hosting OIS MUN, students have worked hard to get this conference up and running. We'll report on this and lots more next week... come back and visit :)

English Week

The English Department ran a wonderful 'English Week'... there were word jumbles, quotes of the day, book reviews, D.E.A.R (drop everything and read), dress up as a character day, spoken word poetry workshops, 'think on your feet' and many more fabulous activities.

Juhu beach clean-up

Last Saturday 75+ students and 25 teachers volunteered to help clean Juhu Beach. Despite some grim weather, everyone worked together to collect an impressive amount of rubbish. (Photos from Saurabh T)

Welcome Oberoi International School Athletics fans and guests.  We have a number of successful sports teams and all the children represent the school with great pride and honour.  Oberoi International School believes that a dynamic program of student activities is vital to the educational development of our students, while recognizing that athletic programs are secondary to our academic programs. The goal of these programs is to realize the value of participation without over-emphasizing the importance of winning. The purpose is to develop and improve character traits among the program’s participants. We believe our programs should expand the experiences available to middle and high school students.
It is true that the most memorable moments in sports are those incredible examples of beating the odds through what seems like sheer magic. OIS Leopards train to experience this magic through sports like Basketball, Track and Field, Tennis, Football, Cricket, Volleyball, Badminton, Table Tennis and Swimming.

The athletic calendar comprises of 3 athletic seasons.

Season 1: August 22nd  to October 27th, 2016

Season 2: November 07th, 2016 to February 05th, 2017

Season 3: February 06th to April 30th, 2017

This year to accommodate greater number of aspiring athletes we have created two training batches instead of one for a few popular sports.
The school facilitates students who play other sports and train outside the school by registering them with the MSSA (Mumbai School Sports Association) and DSO (District Sports Organisation), providing the documentation and leaves required to participate.
Practice games with other international schools are intermittently scheduled to build camaraderie with other local teams and infuse a sense of  non-competitive sportsmanship.
